FAIR² Code of Conduct

Purpose

The FAIR² community is committed to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and collaborative environment for all participants. This Code of Conduct outlines the expectations for behavior by contributors, maintainers, and stakeholders across all FAIR² activities, including online discussions, collaborative projects, events, and affiliated spaces.

Open collaboration, transparency, and mutual respect are essential for advancing AI-ready, FAIR-compliant metadata standards. All participants are expected to uphold these values.


Our Commitment

As maintainers, contributors, and community members, we pledge to:

  • Foster an environment where all individuals feel welcome regardless of background, experience, identity, or ability.
  • Encourage constructive contributions, thoughtful dialogue, and respectful critique.
  • Uphold the principles of openness, fairness, and accountability in all FAIR²-related forums and activities.
  • Prevent harassment, discrimination, or exclusionary behavior of any kind.

Harassment or violations of this code undermine the community and will not be tolerated.


Expected Behavior

All participants are expected to:

  • Be respectful and courteous in all interactions.
  • Engage constructively, offering helpful feedback and supporting others’ contributions.
  • Acknowledge the work of others and provide appropriate credit.
  • Use inclusive and professional language in all communications.
  • Respect privacy and confidentiality, especially in shared or collaborative spaces.

Unacceptable Behavior

The following behaviors are considered unacceptable within the FAIR² community:

  • Harassment or intimidation of any kind, including discriminatory comments or personal attacks.
  • Use of hate speech, derogatory, or exclusionary language.
  • Sustained disruption of meetings, forums, or conversations.
  • Trolling, inflammatory commentary, or deliberate provocation.
  • Unsolicited promotions, spam, or unrelated sales activity.

Reporting a Violation

If you observe or experience behavior that violates this Code of Conduct, please:

  1. Document the incident, where safe to do so.
  2. Report confidentially to the FAIR² Steering Committee via email at:

All reports will be reviewed promptly and confidentially. The Steering Committee will investigate the situation and take appropriate action based on the circumstances.


Consequences

Depending on the nature and severity of the violation, actions may include:

  • A formal warning or request to modify behavior.
  • Temporary suspension from communication channels or events.
  • Permanent removal from FAIR² projects, platforms, or governance bodies.

The FAIR² Steering Committee reserves the right to take any necessary measures to maintain a safe and inclusive community.


Scope

This Code of Conduct applies to all FAIR²-related environments, including but not limited to:

  • GitHub repositories and issue trackers
  • Mailing lists and collaborative platforms
  • Online forums and discussion boards
  • Events, webinars, and conferences
  • Public and private communications involving FAIR² activities
